My son is 11years old in gr 6. He has been struggling quite a bit with the mask mandates in school this year. As his father, I am becoming increasingly concerned for his well-being. As I’m sure you may be familiar, students are required to be wearing masks even in gym class.
He has always been a good student and lately I have noticed he is becoming increasingly withdrawn and has been much more quiet than usual. Since the beginning of the school year, he has expressed several persistent complaints relating to wearing a mask at school. Specifically, he has complained of dizziness, headaches, and intermittent chest pains. He has shared that he feels his homeroom teacher is targeting him as a result of his reluctance to wear the mask due to his physical symptoms. As a result of these complaints, I provided him with a notice of liability, of which he gave to his teacher last week. His teacher informed him that he could put his mask on or would no longer be allowed to attend school.
In talking with him, he has shared that he doesn’t feel his classmates are treating him differently, however, feels targeted by his teacher.
I want to lodge a formal complaint regarding the infringement on not only his bodily autonomy, but being forced to continue wearing a mask despite, potentially concerning physical and mental health consequences.
